CHAPTER 34

Commander

Ibent my arm behind me, gripped my blade, and slid it out in front as the girl wisely distanced herself. With a sharp intake of breath, I hammered the hilt of it against the wall of dirt like the enemy that it was. Thick earth began to part away in large clumps, and heavy grunts left me as I impaled the wall with more force, dredging shafts of dirt into our space.

I paused for a moment, lowering my head. I didn’t need the rest. I never did. Rest wasn’t the problem. It was the air; or rather, the lack of it. If I didn’t hurry we would both be entombed down here. The game of ‘seek and find’ would be over.

Finally, a massive bucket-full of damp earth gave way to dry, spilling from the wall like a barrel plug and revealing a sizeable gap behind it. My breath surged as I hastily sheathed my blade and used both palms to rake the dirt downward in the very space required to breathe.

The girl coughed behind me as dust filled the tunnel in a cloud. But a hint of light emerged above us, and I let a relieved chuckle pass through me at the growing sight of day. The flaming-haired girl joined at my side, raking away the dirt that had encased me as I continued to pull more downward.

Both of our figures scaled on top of the rising mound as the sky finally revealed herself through an opening the size of my waist. Delicate leaves peeked at us from above, but my concealed grin fled as a knowingness alerted me.

I extended a stiff hand toward the girl, motioning her to stop.
